Op 22-01-2010 tijdens de laatste verkiezingen van de Nederlandse Antillen en op 10-10-10 tijdens de Ontmanteling van de Nederlandse Antillen heeft het kunstproject Walking 2gether van beeldend kunstenaar Frouwkje Smit, plaats gevonden. 376 paar gevonden schoenen en slippers hebben in Willemstad en in Den Haag gestaan. De gehele installatie was te zien in Galerie Alma Blou / Landhuis Habaai (februari 2010) op Curaçao. En tijdens het Shoot Me Film Festival (10-17 oktober 2010) in Den Haag.

Projectbeschrijving “Walking 2gether”
Op 22 januari 2010 gaat Curaçao naar de stembus. Mensen brengen hun stem uit en kunnen kiezen welke kant hun eiland op wil. Het zijn de laatste verkiezingen van het land Nederlandse Antillen. Op 10-10-2010 (als het gaat lukken) zullen er Eilandsraad verkiezingen zijn, die de nieuwe regeringen zal opleveren voor de toekomstige landen. Curaçao zal verder gaan als zelfstandig land binnen het (Nederlands) Koninkrijk. Een roerige tijd waarin Curaçao richting kiest voor de toekomst.
Ik kwam naar Curaçao zonder al teveel voorkennis en verwachtingen over wat hier aan te treffen. Ik zag een eiland dat vecht met haar verleden en zoekt naar een nieuwe balans om verder te gaan. De Nederlandse aanwezigheid op Curaçao heeft de huidige maatschappij sterk beïnvloed. Ik zie mensen die op zoek zijn om de geschiedenis een plek te geven en een nieuwe weg in te slaan.
Tegen deze achtergrond ontstond het idee voor ‘Walking 2gether’, een project waarin ik oude schoenen en slippers, aangespoeld op de vele stranden die Curaçao rijk is, gebruik. Deze schoenen staan voor mij symbool voor de vele verschillende mensen en culturen die in de loop der jaren op Curaçao zijn aangespoeld, en die op 22 januari samen een nieuwe toekomst kiezen. Een toekomst waarin zij hand-in-hand (schoen aan schoen) een nieuwe periode in de geschiedenis van Curaçao ingaan.
Ik heb de schoenen per twee aan elkaar geknoopt, zodat de verloren schoenen weer een paar vormen. Hiermee staan de schoenen symbool voor een nieuwe verbondenheid en het bewandelen van een nieuw pad. In totaal zijn er 376 paar schoenen; symbool voor het feit dat 376 jaar geleden (toen Johan van Walbeeck voet al wal zette op Curaçao), het historisch bewust zijn een doorbraak beleefde. Ik hoop dat de schoenen een aanmoediging zullen zijn om de handen ineen te slaan en samen de toekomst te bewandelen.
De schoenen zullen op de dag van de verkiezingen uitgezet worden op de Pontjesbrug (Emmabrug), die Punda en Otrobanda met elkaar verbindt. Deze locatie is gekozen omdat de brug letterlijk verschillende werelden verbindt, het toeristische en westerse Punda, en het meer lokale Otrobanda.
Bovendien hebben schoenen en de brug een bijzondere relatie met elkaar. In vroeger tijden mochten de arme bewoners – degenen die geen geld hadden om schoenen te dragen en dus blootsvoets liepen – gratis over de brug. De rijkeren liepen op schoenen en betaalden om naar de overkant te mogen. De brug is dus niet alleen een teken van verbinding geweest, maar ook een plek waar een diepe scheiding in de samenleving, namelijk die tussen arm en rijk, zichtbaar werd door iets alledaags als het wel of niet dragen van schoenen.
Door op 22 januari de aangespoelde schoenen aaneen te schakelen tot een lang lint van nieuw gevormde paren, hoop ik bij te dragen aan de nieuwe invulling die Curaçao aan haar eiland gaat geven. Bovenal hoop ik dat de schoenen een ieder na laat denken over zijn eigen rol in het toekomstige Curaçao, en dat het een aanmoediging is om samen te werken, in plaats van de nu vaak aanwezige polarisatie tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen.

Project description “Walking 2gether”
In the New Year and on the date of January 22nd, 2010, the people of Curacao will be headed for the ballots to cast their votes in national elections. These will be the last elections since the islands legislative reform, furthering the country to becoming a self-ruling nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These are turbulent times in which Curacao chooses direction for the future.
When I came to Curacao, I came somewhat unprepared, without prior knowledge or expectations of what I was to find. Upon arriving here, I saw an island in conflict with its past, striving to come to terms with its own history so it may advance into the future. I saw a society, heavily influenced by the presence of the Dutch, and I saw a people, looking to give a place to their history, to fit it into their identity so they may take a new road, to embark on a new journey.
This was the backdrop out of which “Walking 2gether” was conceived, an art project using old, worn-out shoes tossed away into the sea and washed up on the shores of Curacao’s many and diverse beaches. These shoes are symbolic of the many peoples and cultures that have arrived on the shores of the island over time. It is these people who will now decide on their future on January 22nd, entering a new period in their island nation’s history.
The lost shoes, bound together to form new pairs, represent the new alliance between the people, walking onto a new path. In total there will be 376 shoes, symbolic of 376 years since the Dutch ( Johan van Walbeeck) first landed on the island. I hope that the shoes will encourage the people to band together and to walk hand-in-hand into the future.
The shoes will be placed on the pontoon bridge (Emmabrug), which is the link between Punda and Otrobanda. This bridge is a true link between two worlds, namely the more tourist-oriented, Westernised Punda and the more local Otrobanda. Also, the shoes and the bridge have an important place in the history of the island, as poor people, who often went barefoot, were exempt from paying toll to use the bridge in former times. The rich, who could afford shoes, were required to pay a fee. In this way, the connecting bridge was also a place where the deep divide between the rich and the poor was emphasised, made visible by the simple daily habit of going shod or barefoot.
By stringing the newly formed pairs of shoes into a single, long chain on January 22nd, I hope to make a contribution to the renewed meaning the people of Curacao will give to their island nation after the state reforms. Above all, I hope the shoes will invite the people to think about the role they want to play in the future of their country and that it will encourage them to work together, overcoming the polarisation that so frequently exists among them at the present time.

Dia 10-10-2010 (si logra) lo tin e elekshon , ku lo determiná e gobièrnunan di e paisnan nobo. Kòrsou lo sigui komo pais outónomo den Reino.
Nos ta den un temporada turbulente pa Kòrsou, buskando su direkshon pa futuro.
Mi a yega Kòrsou sin muchu konosementu ni espektativa di kiko lo mi kontra. Mi a mira un isla, ku ta bringa ku su pasado; un isla ku ta buska un balanse nobo pa sigui su rumbo. Presensia kontinuo di Hulandes na Kòrsou a influensiá e komunidat aktual fuertemente. Mi ta topa hende, ku ta buska un manera pa integrá historia i presente i abri paso pa un kaminda nobo.
A base di e opservashonnan akí a nase e idea pa “Walking2gether”. Pa realisá e proyekto mi a hasi uso di sapatu i slòf bieu, ku den kurso di tempu a drif for di laman riba tera na e kantidat di playanan, ku ta parti di rikesa di Kòrsou. Pa mi e sapatunan akí ta símbolo pa tur e diferente hende i kulturanan, ku pa añanan largu a yega tera di Kòrsou. Dia 22 di yanüari tur e hendenan ei huntu ta bai skohe un futuro nobo. Un futuro, kanando huntu, mano a mano (sapatu na sapatu), pa drenta un époka nobo den historia di Kòrsou.
Mi a konopá e sapatu i slòfnan dos dos na otro, di moda ku e sapatunan pèrdí ta forma un par atrobe. Asina e sapatunan ta simbolisá un konekshon nobo pa sigui un senda nobo. Na tur tin 376 par di sapatu, símbolo di e echo ku 376 aña pasá, (yegada di e Hulandes Johan van Walbeeck na Kòrsou) a spièrta un konsiensia históriko nobo. Mi ta spera ku e sapatunan lo por ta un estímulo pa pone man na obra i drenta e futuro nobo konhuntamente.
Dia di elekshon nos lo pone e sapatunan riba brùg di ponton (Emmabrug), e brùg ku ta konektá Punda i Otrobanda. Nos a skohe e sitio akí pasobra e brùg ta konektá literalmente, konkretamente dos mundu diferente, Punda ku su ambiente turístiko i europeo i Otrobanda ku su ambiente mas lokal.
Ademas e sapatunan i e brùg tin un relashon spesial ku otro. Den pasado e hende pobernan, ku no tabatin moda di kumpra sapatu antó tabata kana pia abou, por a krusa brùg grátis. E rikunan, ku sapatu na pia, mester a paga pa krusa brùg. Ke men e brùg no tabata solamente un símbolo di konekshon, pero tambe un lugá kaminda e separashon profundo den komunidat, esta e divishon entre pober i riku, tabata visibel den algu asina komun: bisti sapatu òf kana pia abou.
